Alaska could soon join the growing number of states calling for congressional term limits, thanks to a push from Rep. Frank Tomaszewski.
On Monday, Tomaszewski, (R-Fairbanks) introduced House Joint Resolution 22, a measure that would add Alaska’s voice to the national effort to impose term limits on members of Congress. The move is part of a broader campaign led by U.S. Term Limits, a nonpartisan nonprofit advocating for structural reforms in Washington.
“It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent,” USTL President Philip Blumel said in a news release. Blumel called term limits a critical step toward restoring trust in government.
Tomaszewski’s resolution is already drawing strong support in the Legislature, the release stated, with some lawmakers signing a pledge to cosponsor HJR22. The resolution is currently assigned to the House State Affairs Committee and will need to pass both legislative chambers before Alaska can officially join the national call.
If 34 states pass resolutions, a convention would be convened to propose a constitutional amendment limiting congressional terms. To take effect, the amendment would need ratification by 38 states.
